Information and communication technologies are increasingly gaining importance in our everyday lives. They are used to build information systems that are the cornerstone of any business today. Survival and success of industries and businesses are now hardly achieved without the extensive use of information systems and technologies. Information systems and technologies help creating new products and services which enable organizations gain a competitive advantage. They also play a significant role in enhancing the decision making process and supporting decisions. They are used in different operations of the public and private sectors. Examples include health, manufacturing, transportation and education sectors.

The ability of information systems to transform data into useful information for further analysis and interpretation assists decision makers in making timely informed decisions. The value of data depends on how it is processed and used to help decision makers achieve organizational goals. The growing amount of data that we produce and consume leaves the door open for research to introduce new solutions and systems that bridge the gap between theory and practice.
